First, a Vauxhall VXR8 GTS for your time:
So I’ve made no secret how much I hate my 2001 MB C240 (rust, anemic power, crap fuel economy with required premium fuel, cramped cabin, other reasons why I hate it that are a story for another time). Its only saving grace is it is RWD. I don’t dislike FWD. Just sick of the torque steer, especially since I prefer an engaging, sporty driving experience.
I’m at a little more than $1000 left to pay off the C240 (like I said, long, painful story for another time) and although I would love to not have a car payment, my current car is a total liability (repairs that are needed and my left shoulder is against the B-pillar — just waiting to get t-boned).
Pending an auto accident (or Powerball/Mega Millions/State Lottery win), I have time on my side to decide. I’ve come up with a list to start with that’s pretty much in order of desirability but of course, subject to change:
1) 2009-2014 Infiniti G37S, G37xS (7sp AT or 6sp MT; most bang for bucks and reliability of the VQ engines)
2) 2010-2014 Infiniti M37, M37x (7sp AT; still a little concerned about fuel economy, may not be as sporty as the G, still has a VQ)
3a) 2008-2012 Lexus IS350, IS350 AWD (6sp AT; the IS250 is such a performance dog, Lexus in general hold their value better, which makes it harder to find a newer model in price range)
3b) 2007-2011 Lexus GS350, GS350 AWD (6sp AT; see IS350)
3c) 2008-2012 Acura TL SH-AWD (5 or 6sp AT; Acuras hold value making getting a newer model difficult, can I get by that awful beak?)
3d) 2007-2012 Acura RL SH-AWD (5 or 6sp AT; see TL SH-AWD, also is it sporty enough and am I not old enough for it yet?)
4a) 2009-2014 Subaru Legacy or Outback 2.5i (6sp MT; JUST SAY “NO” TO CVT); 3.6R (5sp AT; I love wagons, always wanted a Subie but will I fit?)
4b) 2009-2014? Subaru Legacy or Outback 2.5GT (6sp MT or 5sp AT; Yay, turbo!, I SAID I LOVE WAGONS!!)
4c) 2008-2013 Volvo XC70 (5, 6, or 8sp AT; ALSO WAGON!!!, I *heart* Volvo and always will, but who’s going pay for the service!?)
4d) 2011-2013 Volvo S60 T5 or T6 AWD (6 or 8sp AT; see XC70)
5) 2009-2013 Volvo S80 AWD (6 or 8sp AT; see XC70, am I an old professor?)
6) 2010-2013 Cadillac CTS Wagon 3.6, CTS4 Wagon 3.6 (6sp AT; MOAR WAGONS!!!!, but more importantly, can I trust GM?)
7) 2009-2013 Cadillac CTS 3.6 Sedan, CTS4 3.6 Sedan (6sp AT; SERIOUSLY, CAN I TRUST GM???)
8) 2012-2014 Fiat 500 Abarth (5sp MT; super cheap fun, kinda want to avoid FWD torque steer, will only get one doing a “DeMuro”, am I getting too old for this shit?)
WC#1) 2009-2012 BMW 335d (6sp AT); 2009-2015 VW Jetta TDI, Golf TDI, Passat TDI (6sp MT or 6sp AT); 2007-2009 MB E320 BlueTEC (5sp or 7sp AT), 2010-2013 MB E350 BlueTEC (7sp AT), (Always wanted a diesel, prefer RWD/AWD but can make an exception for FWD diesels, love German cars, HATE German car repair prices outside of warranty)
WC#2) 2014 Chevy Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel (6sp AT; multiple WTCC wins, but typical GM hard plastics especially on the doors make it suck, something something GM something something TRUST)
EDIT: I forgot to add the 2014 Mazda 6, wishing an AWD version was available in the U.S.
Extra unobtainium for your time, an Audi R8 LMS

Sounds like you want an E46 M3.

2003 Mercury Marauder ?
You can get one with less than 20K miles for like 12K.
Future collectible for sure and plenty of fun to drive

I’ve been happy with my 2012 CTS (even with the 3.0 V6). No issues thus far, though I only have about 45k miles on it. Make sure to buy a certified car if you go that route. I wouldn’t call the car sporty, but it’s definitely comfortable.

LOL you think gas consumption in the Infiniti M is bad, how good do you think it is in the G? Try 24mpg on mostly highway driving if it’s a G37x.
I would not buy something you can’t afford. Don’t get an S80, don’t get an Infiniti, don’t get an RL, etc., unless you’re ready to shell out for maintenance.

Why not at 08/09 STS-V? Under 20k and almost 474hp. Also out of this list I would pick the CTS sedan or Infiniti M37

I can tell you for sure that you’ll fit in a newer legacy or outback. I’m 6'10 and fit insanely well.

An E46 would be good but be ready for maintenance costs.
Any thought given to an RX-8? RWD, useable rear seats, fun to drive.

Cool car and would probably be inexpensive to maintain being a panther body, but it’s too old to want as a DD.

Ok, so cross out the “x” models then. Why would the maintenance cost be high on the Infinitis when you’re dealing with Nissan parts?
I had an ‘02 TL Type-S at one time and the service done to it was relatively cheap. I figured the RL would be the same. I wonder what causes that?

Nice. I know that neither the 3.0 or 3.6 have much torque below 3000rpm, but at least the 3.6 has a little more down low.

N52-equipped BMWs are relatively reliable and at least no worse on maintenance costs than the Mercedes, likely less costly to maintain than the diesels as well. The Infiniti you have listed is going to be faster, but coarser. Fuel economy of a G37 is comparable to a 328i, in both cases AWD is obviously worse. This is only for the N52 cars, the new turbo fours are a completely unknown quantity reliability-wise as far as I’m concerned.
Despite the fact that I got lucky with my Subaru, I don’t think it’ll be much debated that NA BMWs are more reliable than turbo Subarus at a mechanical level.

So the ‘09-’14 are a go!? I’m 6'2". I drove an ‘05 & ‘06 (rental & test drive) and remember how much I wished the seats/steering wheel had more adjustments.

you should fit just fine in a 2010-2015 Outback. I’ve driven a 2012, and two 2014's, and own a 2015. As long as they have the power drivers seat, there is plenty of room inside. Steering wheel adjustment should be better as well, as the newer outbacks and legacys should have a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Also, try to avoid the moonroof. I looked at an outback with one, and fit, but it made headroom a tad bit tight.

I’m trying to be a good boy and avoid ze germans because of the high maintenance cost.
The RX-8 never did it for me, especially as a follow-up to the FD RX-7.
Speaking of Mazda, I realized I left the new Mazda 6 of my list. Will fix soon.
...too bad the answer isn’t a MX-5 (Miata)

I am concerned about turbo anything. I know newer ones 2006-present are much better at not being starved for oil unless you do something really stupid, but I would hate to have another blow up on me.
RIP my ‘96 855T :(

Subaru turbos are not only water-cooled but have the trick remote surge tank which draws coolant into the turbo after the car’s turned off. That said, turbos blow (as in fail, not as in crude slang for being bad), especially on turbo Subarus which are easy and cheap to modify. My WRX blew the turbo around 100k, but I was running Stage 2 so I can’t completely blame it on the car.

I thought about the STS-V, but what’s the cost on parts/service for a limited edition, supercharged Northstar engined vehicle?
Also, can truly trust in a GM product?

Sounds like you wanna be my sugar daddy! You gonna take me to Buffalo Wild Wings tonight so we can watch the college championship tonight in style?
j/k
Seriously though, I could only buy one if I had more disposable income. Come on Powerball!!!

They’re not as expensive as you think. Go look on autotrader or Craigslist. Here in Canada you’d can get one for about $15k in good condition.

I don’t know that the RX-8 was a follow up to the RX7. Very different cars.
That said, drive one. I kind of felt the same way until i drove one. The interior is excellent, despite its age and it is really a blast to drive.

My family has owned several GM products. I would say you can trust them to be reliable more than the Germans at the very least.
